"The Big Orange Splot"

For Storytime in January, I read Daniel Pinkwater's amazing book about diversity called "The Big Orange Splot". It's about a totally un-diverse neighborhood that reverses its course when a seagull empties a can of orange paint on the roof of one of the homeowners. He responds by leaving the orange splot and adding many additional colors and designs while explaining his new look represents all his dreams. The neighborhood is shocked, but one by one, all are won over to express their own individual dreams by customizing their homes, making the block a truly diverse world.

When you get to the podcast section, you might be interested in NPR: Children's Literature with Daniel Pinkwater. There's only one episode thus far so it's hard to tell where they're going with this, if anywhere. But it looks promising anyway.
